"9/6 Jacks or Better" is a video poker game with a payout schedule that, when played perfectly, returns an expected 99.54%. The 9 refers to the payout for a full house; the 6 for a flush. Although it's negative expectation, it's often played profitably by professionals (such as Bob Dancer) in combination with cash back specials and other promotions.

"8/5 machines" involve the same video poker game, but with less generous payouts. Because the overall return is significantly lower, it's rarely made advantageous by specials and promotions (it's around 97.5%).

Thus my analogy to sports betting. A player may be able to pick at 51% by himself and occasionally make it profitable through low juice and specials. But if he gets an extra percentage of help from someone else: 1) the number of advantage plays increases dramatically; and 2) the value of the advantage plays he's already identified is augmented.
