I deleted all cookies, and SSB has been working correctly since then.

Perhaps the problem is stale cookies. I deleted all my cookies (with Internet Explorer, pull down Tools, then click on Internet Options), and now after posting a new message to plant a new cookie, SSB recognizes me. It continued to recognize me an hour later. I'll post if the cookie problem shows up again, and otherwise assume that deleting all cookies did the trick.
