A Domain Name Server was down

Our ISP's domain name server our web server utilizes seems to be broken. I reconfigured our server to use an operational domain name server.
Every computer on the Internet utilizes a "name server". A name server is what turns a hostname like www.bj21.com into an ip address like 67.72.100.192. Computers use ip addresses to communicate; hostnames are simply an abstraction to make the process more human friendly. It's easier for us to remember www.bj21.com than 67.72.100.192.
Some programs on a web server (and on home computers as well) will hang if the domain name server is unavailable to handle requests. The timeout for requests is usually set to 30 seconds. That is why some pages were loading slowly.
