Nothing to worry about yet

WE is a LONG way from winning the Belmont. First, the Maryland horse was getting to him at the end of a shorter distance than the Derby. This is not to say the Marylander will beat him in the Bel, but I don't think he's going to run off a la Secretariat by 31 lengths. True, there hasn't been much chasing him, but neither his times nor his performances have been eye-catching, IMHO.
A fresh horse has got to have a chance. Many 3-yr.-olds are kept out of the Derby and Preakness because they haven't matured to the satisfaction of their trainers, physically and/or mentally. It IS a horrible grind. The end of a mile and a half after winning the first two legs has got to look a long way away.
Even with WE's impressive tactical speed, if other speed types decided to drive him into the ground, they could do it. The problem is, the other speed wants to win the race, too, unless they enter into a suicide pact. I can't foresee WE skipping into the stretch with a huge lead and gapping the field. More likely, he encounters trouble, he's a bit tired, he blows a fetlock, or Proud Citizen turns the tables on him the way Bet Twice did after losing to 'sheba in the first two legs. WE can run a fine race and still get beat.
Finally, we're caught up in the hype. Something like 26 of the last 40 Derby winners have also won either the Preakness or the Belmont, so it's more likely than not they win two legs. Only Secretariat, Slew and Affirmed have gone on to complete the trifecta in that time.
Best of all, unlikeable dickhead Baffert is spouting off about his chances, which, if there is a God, is enough reason to think he won't win.
