Your chess analogy is interesting, inasmuch as I have played in many chess tourneys and have been very familiar with the top players. As opposed to the ancients whom you quote, I would rely more on previous World Champion Anatoly Karpov:

If more than one move has the same chances, he would tailor his selection to his opponent. Eg., were he playing against an aggressive player like Tal, he would select the more passive continutation but were he playing against a defensive player like Petrosian, he would select the more active continuation.

BUT the key is that if there were only ONE best move, he would play it no matter who his opponent was.

The last is what I seek: the MATHEMATICALLY best way to play a hand. I will THEN deal with my read of my opponents, myself.
