... but the relevent question is *does* it happen? Ask any experienced online player whether they have ever smelled possible collusion in a game - especially the type that would pose a serious threat to their potential profit - and I believe the answer will be a resounding NO.

I agree it would be easier to communicate online than in B&M but I emphatically, resoundingly disagree that it would be easier to escape detection. Online the casino can see the cards of every player for every hand played in its entire history. It can create simple programs that analyze how often individual players play with each other at the same table. It can analyze the URL's of the players. Even players themselves can see the cards of any player involved in a showdown (this is possible in most B&M casinos as well, but rarely requested). For any casino that is serious about controlling online collusion, it would almost be a trivial matter for them to implement procedures to reduce any (long term) collusion to zero.
