I think giving advice like "play only hands like XX" steers the student in the wrong direction. I believe the number one skill that makes a poker player is almost never mentioned and that is: GAME SELECTION.

Hold 'em is a game of domination. A hand such as KQ has such a high variance of value depending on what kind of game you are playing in. Imagine you are on the button with KQ facing an UTG raise and everyone else has folded. Does the raiser really have KJ or worse to be able to justify a call? There are games where you can count on at least AQ for the raiser and there are games where you get yahoos dumping their chips in with QJ. These 2 scenarios are very very different and it is reading these types of situations (whether you are on the upper end or the lower end of "domination") that I believe accounts for the biggest portion of profits and losses in limit hold 'em.

Above all, avoid any advice that claims to have simple algorithmic answers for specific situations. You need to have a flexible strategy for the game that varies and adapts to the particular game you are playing in.
