I'm still learning but I disagree about luck

In Response To: advantage play. (Dreamer)

I watch WPT and they always play Texas Hold 'em. To me, there is a great deal of luck in the flop, 4th street and the river because the weaker hand can be saved after the players are all-in. BUT there is not a lot of luck in guaging the other players. Nor is there a lot of luck in having the highest chip count going into the final table.

The guy who won last night (Layne somebody) is rather famous. I saw him accurately guess that Buss (owner of the Lakers) had a queen of clubs on a certain hand and he correctly folded a solid hand. He knew by "tells" or the way Buss was betting the hand.

Layne also made some lower percentage calls to take guys out. He got "lucky", going into 4th street twice with the weaker hand, eliminating 2 guys who were all-in. BUT he could afford to take a lower percentage chance to eliminate these guys because he had a massive chip lead. He built up that lead on all the lower tables leading to the final table.
That was not luck.

I think that other variations of poker have less luck than Texas Hold 'em, as far as playing the cards are concerned. But in Texas Hold 'em where the bet is unlimited, the key is reading players and accumulating chips. One can be bluffed and/or make mistakes and read another player wrong but that is not luck.

I am a rank beginner but this is what I have observed watching the WPT
so far.
