preflop call is routine

The preflop action is the least debateable part of this hand. If you even consider folding something like 87o heads up in the BB, the blinds will eat you alive. The BB is getting 3:1 odds on the preflop call. If you've ever watched some of the excellent heads up players online, you'll see that most defend their big blind very liberally.

Otherwise, the play of this hand is pretty routine. You could play differently against different types of opponents. On the river, you could check-raise against aggressive value bettors, but I think betting is ok.

If I were in your opponent's shoes, I would have raised the river, as I wouldn't really think you had flopped a set or a flush (I would have expected you to re-raise the flop if you had flopped a set and I would have expected a re-raise on either the flop or turn with a flush.) I would have expected you to hold a hand like a big pair with a club or trip sixes, so against me with that particular holding, you would gain an extra bet from betting than check-raising. But, I'm not really sure if betting is superior against the full range of hands I could have. I would play something like AcQd in the same manner your opponent did, with the intention of checking behind on the river if I didn't improve (actually I would have re-raised preflop with that hand, but otherwise I would play it similarly.)
