steal and countersteal strategy

In Response To: short-handed questions (Tekari)

How often do you have to call in the sb or even bb against an aggresive player that raises alot pre-flop? I mean it depends but what is the minimum you have to call to keep him from getting the best of it by just raising always. I don't want to be giving up too much.

Sklansky addresses precisely this question in HPFAP. But I don't think he does a particualrly good job of it. Most of my opponents call (and reraise) way more than he suggests (despite that fact that I don't raise anything approaching every hand). Still, his analysis will give you a starting point; you must call at least that loosely to avoid being robbed. It is a place to hang your hat as a ring player trying to gain experience short handed.

Part of the problem is that very aggressive stealing is pretty good play shorthanded, so the answer is that you must also play well. Part of the problem is that the "it depends" answer is yet more prevalent short handed; you must respond in the context of how frequently your opponent presents each betting pattern. Thus you cannot thoroughly analyze a single hand, but only a set of hands.
