calling with two overcards

I have been playing in cardrooms for a couple of years. Maybe 10 hrs a month at low to mid limits. I have never read a book on the game and see this a lot and am not sure what the best percentage play is. I have something like A-K and flop is 4-8-Q. I will usually fold this if there is a bet in front of me as I concede that the bettor has made at least top pair; or raise if I am last action (assume no flush draw)and it has been checked to me. The raise will usually get me a free river card for the small bet after the flop. Am I playing this correctly? Should I be calling bets in this situation more often instead of folding?
