Books for beginners

I have always had an interest in playing poker, but have never played a hand in my entire life (gulp). Strangely enough, my father has played cards since his youth. I simply had an affinity for sports and sports gambling while growing up. I play BJ (basic strategy only) and simply rotate money if/when I ever go to a casino. The draw for cards was just enver there for me. Now that I have grown much older, I have a desire to learn the game.
That being said, what books would you recommend for someone like myself? What advice could you offer? Again, I am not looking to become an avid player, but would like to learn for recreational (gambling) purposes. Thanks in advance for your responses.
