The world embassy snooker championships begin tomorrow, which means a great deal in Asia and Europe and absolutely nothing elsewhere.
My pick for the tournament is Paul Hunter. The lesson of the past twenty years is that each successive generation of snooker players radically raises the standard of play, and betting on newcomers mindlessly, consistently yields a worthwhile profit.
Hunter is the best of a new breed, devastating break-building & potting skills, big match temprament, increasingly sophisticated safety play and an opposing field that either lacks motivation or consistency (backing the favourite Ronnie O'Sullivan, to self-destruct halfway through would be a positive expectation wager at even-money). He can be backed at 25-1 with any number of bookies.
