In Response To: reasons why TB will not repeat (Ricky)

Would Tampa have won the SB last year with the 2 first round draft picks and without Gruden?

TB has had the luxury of giving up the draft picks (for Gruden) these last 2 years because (1) their pick position was low due to their being a playoff team and (2) their backups were very young. Pre-Gruden, the team often dumped popular veterans when their backups were ready to play. Rookies and 2nd year men got more minutes playing time under Dungy than on most other teams. Tampa's philosophy was always to build through the draft and stay young.

Gruden loves veterans and looks for guys in free agency, over the draft. The money they saved on not having 1st & 2nd round draft picks
went to get those outstanding free agents. They were a bit older but
they won the Super Bowl.

Sapp is the only older player on the DL. Brooks in the only older player in the LB corps. Lynch is the only older safety. The CB's are
in their prime. There are very good younger backups (Howell - SS, Ivy
- CB, for instance) that nobody ever hears about because the starters
are so famous.

Sure Gruden aged the team a great deal by bringing in the veterans to get the team over the hump. But there are still many young players on the team who are very good and will fill a lot of big shoes.
