In Response To: Braves Offensive Problems Solved (urban33)

Franco has always been able to hit and his Mexican League numbers prove he still can. His mobility is superior to what they already had there. The Braves have only C. Jones and Jordan that they don't need worry about right now. However, A. Jones and Lopez are not exactly on the downhill slope of their careers. If those two get it going before next year, that gives the Braves at least a chance. That leaves Giles, Franco/Caminiti, Surhoff/Gilkey as remaining starters with the capability for big production in a series. Of course, at the current pace the Braves either won't make the playoffs, or will sneak in. If they sneak in, there won't be enough momentum to do any damage.

Now, if they go into the playoffs with momentum the outlook is very appealing. The overall pitching is superior to any previous Braves' team. Three excellent starters, a solid fourth starter, very good middle relief, and a closer as good as any in baseball, especially in October. Mix the pitching, hitting(big if), and experience and the final product is a very dangerous team. I would say, at least, the favorite throughout the NL playoffs. Still, I feel there is less than a 30% chance that the bats will come around.

I do agree about Schuerholz being overrated. Too many bad moves and no moves in the last few years suggest that his early Atlanta success had a lot to do with luck. That man can thank Pendleton and McGriff for much of his accolades, not to mention, Smoltz and Glavine, two who were coming into their own when he came aboard. Although no genius, he still rates pretty high as a GM.
