In Response To: Predicting pitcher performance (Colin Caster)

it is the development of a good 3rd pitch. Harv was right, there was something
wrong with him, whether you call it a full blown injury or just some soreness
because he is no longer throwing his hard slider(take it from personal
experience, it was flat nasty, as was the 94-95 mph fastball he rearranged
my spine with in college, think I still got a bruise from that :) ).
He went to a curveball which he was throwing much too slow for his fastball,
too big of a difference in speeds, easier to sit back. When you switch from
a slider to a curveball, that is usually a sign that you are worried about your
elbow and want to take some pressure off it(or your slider is not very good
which wasn't his case). The pitch that has helped him as the season has gone
on is his new found changeup. The change is hands down the best pitch in
baseball, and he is throwing a good one right now, gotten better over the course
of the year, and that has been the difference. Look at the breakdown by month.

Month Runners/Inn W/9 Inn K/9 Inn
April 1.52 3.78 5.58
May 1.37 3.24 4.41
June 1.73 6.12 6.57
July 1.07 2.88 9.18

The difference between a good changeup and a bad changeup shows in the splits
between June and July. A bad changeup means you are giving it away somehow,
people aren't swinging at it. A good changeup doesn't have to be a strike to be
the most effective. From what I saw in his start vs Atlanta, it was great, same
motion, great placement off the plate, the Braves couldn't leave it alone,
it's a great pitch to have. In his last 5 starts, he has beaten Atlanta, Houston,
Minnesota, and has a no decision in a win vs Cleveland where he threw well. Three
of those 4 teams are teams where you must have a good off speed pitch to beat them.
You won't fastball/curveball them to death, they eat that up.
