Had it in him to be great, and he always had a nasty curve even back with Mets--he simply over-threw the thing with too much arm speed. Ryan, when he had his A stuff, didn't even need a breaking pitch. In his no-hitter against Detroit his fast-ball was so alive that he was vitually untouchable.

A pitcher finds his stuff early on, or he never finds it, unless you're talking about a Wilber Wood who transforms himself into a pretty decent kuckleball pitcher midway through his career. An average pitcher doesn't transform or ressurect a flagging performance curve with the discovery of third pitch.

If Sele let the hitter know before each pitch that his over-hand curve was coming he'd get creamed--hitting plane or no hitting plane. It's the deceptiveness in THE WAY IT IS DELIVERED--it looks too much like his normal delivery and that split micro-second that the batter is held up in the lurch trying to decide what it is, is enough to screw his timing and rythym up so that he swings through it.

I suppose you can develope a slider somewhat later on--meaning still in your early twenties, as I believe Weaver is, but not much later than that, We'll see if Weavers' transformation is anything more than temporary. Haven't seen him much--does he have a Guidry like slider now that no-one could ever fiqure out?
