What makes Stanford Wong an authority on football wagering?

In Response To: a question (Arthur)

The question puzzles me, Arthur. What *wouldn't* make him an authority? The fact that he wasn't himself a pro player? That he hadn't had years of taking out full page ads in Don Best touting 70% winners? That he's known for being really good at *other* things? That he had a losing season last year?

I'm not being sarcastic -- I really want to know. It seems self-evident to me that the chief ingredients in the recipe for authority in an area such as sports wagering include: intelligence, skepticism, hard work, and analytical and quantitative skills. It also helps not to have an enormous ego, so that one is better able to correct his mistakes and to listen to other smart people.

And Stanford surrounds himself with smart people, not professional sycophants. He submits his ideas in writing before some of the harshest critics and best thinkers you will find anywhere on the web. On the rare occasions he's wrong, the poor guy gets pummelled in public by this rag-tag posse of pros, semipros, and amateurs.

There are many, many football betting sites on the web, some of them populated with people whose entire lives have centered around sports wagering. From 99% of them, I have learned *absolutely nothing* of value. Worse, many are filled with self-delusions, poor reasoning, and outright lies, all of which obviously inhibit the quest for understanding. You know who I have learned important things from?
Stanford's gang of skeptics, most of them part-timers: engineers, retirees, accountants, actuaries, grad students, statisticians, attorneys, writers, and assholes.

Arthur, stick around a while and you'll see. You'll see even if you don't buy anything and just hang around the "Bleachers" section for a couple of weeks. Given the skepticism you've already demonstrated, I predict you'll soon become an important part of the site.

Best wishes,

Colin
