In Response To: Holes in Hockey?! (phil palmer)

Hockey lines are probably the weakest lines of all the sports because not many people know enough about it(on both sides of the table). Many times you can even lock in a profit before the game starts. It isn't uncommon, especially early in the year, to find the dog of a particular game at +.5 +120 and the favorite -.5 +120 at another book. Many books have no clue about hockey but are bailed out because many bettors don't have a clue either.

Taking the points in hockey usually means getting 0.5 goal(some games 1.5, and on some extreme cases 2.5). On average, 0.5 goal is worth about 45 cents. If you see a dog open at +200 on the moneyline, they will be somewhere around +0.5 +155 on the Canadian line. If I had no opinion on the game, but someone wanted me to pick which one I would take if I had to pick, I would take the +0.5 +155. 45-50 cent difference is the grey area in my mind, you can go either way, and I would rather have the half goal in any situation where I feel the lines are equal. If it was +210, I would take the +210. If I had an opinion on the game, then it would depend on what my line said the game should be. If my line had the game from the dog being favored to the favorite being -0.30, I would take the moneyline if it is at least 45 cents different. If my spread was over -0.30, I want the half goal. There is also a puckline, but to me, that is the worst bet in hockey 99% of the time. 1/2-1 is a puckline, meaning the dog is +.5 +100, and the favorite is -1 +100. The only time I ever take the puckline is in a situation like this:

New Jersey +.5 -105
Colorado -.5 -115

The puckline would be 1/2-1. If you like New Jersey, bet the puckline, you will get even money.
