Although far from an expert myself, this is what I have observed. On Sunday evening when the lines are hung for next Sunday's games there is often a lot of movement. I would consider this to be the lines "settling". By that I mean that if these opening lines are off by much, sharp bettors will lay money and books will correct/adjust the lines. This continues through Sunday evening into Monday night as different books put out thier lines for the week. After Monday night things seem to settle down. There will be a few small adjustments over the next few days, but usually nothing major. Late Thursday/Early Friday the lines will begin to move again. I believe that most of this movement is caused by the public betting more on some teams than others. As the weekend starts the lines will move more quickly. On Saturday evening and Sunday morning the lines will be moving from all the action coming in. I also believe that some of these late line moves may be caused by syndicate bettors who are very sharp and are betting huge sums of money. These syndicates may have inside information that give them a huge edge. I have heard that some people who are in the loop have made big money just watching these groups, and then getting money down before the syndicate bettors push the line.
