Size your bets according the payoff, not the bet size.

See chapter 2, "Money Management", in Sharp Sports Betting. It sounds to me as if wagering $1000 at 40:1 was grossly overbetting. Had you bet a more reasonable amount, you would not feel the need to hedge the bet.
