Hi all:
MLB
Blue Jays/Halladay (+145) @ Yanks/Hitchcock (-160), 8:05 EST
Pick: Blue JaysIn an example where the Yankees' largesse bit them in the ass, we bring you Sterling Hitchcock.
New York didn't really need Hitchock. He's never been anything special in his career, though many always thought he would be. But because they Yankees could, they did -- trading with the Padres to get Hitchcock. Since joining the Yankees, Hithcock has made five pretty lousy starts, somehow winning three of them despite a 6.41 ERA in 26.2 IP. He's given up 37 hits with a 15/9 K/BB ratio. Two of his three wins were against Texas (in one he gave up 5 ER in 5 IP) while the other came against Tampa Bay. Just want the Yanks want to have under contract for another year.
Meanwhile, Halladay has been coming into his own. In 59.2 IP he's given up 63 hits with a 51/20 K/BB ratio and 4.22 ERA. This after posting an ERA over 10.00 last year and compiling a K/BB ratio of almost dead even for his career. He's really turned it around this year. He's only 2-1 in his nine starts, but he's definitely pitching well enough to win.
Of course, the Yankees are the superior team. They have beaten Toronto six straight this year. But those wins have been because of great starting pitching -- the last six starters for New York against Toronto have been Mike Mussina, Andy Pettitte, Roger Clemens, Mike Mussina, Roger Clemens, and Mike Mussina. Not a Sterling Hitchcock in the bunch.
The Blue Jays aren't THAT bad. They are 64-68 overall. They are 33-33 on the road. And despite the six-game winning streak against Toronto, the Yanks are only 8-6 against the Jays. This line is based on Yankee lust, but in reality the Blue Jays have a very good chance to win this one.
Good luck,
Mike
