what you just described about betting Oakland is technically not a hedge. that's just an independent wager that you think is a good wager and you'd bet it whether or not you had Seattle at 30-1...granted, it just so happens that it does hedge the Seattle bet...but the question is : would you have bet Oakland at 20-1 if you did not have Seattle at 30-1 at the beginning of the year? if yes, then its just a good bet that just so happens to hedge another position of yours. if no, then its a hedge.

there are only two reason to hedge :

1. the risk you have on is too much for you to stomach. say you had the Ravens at 40-1 at the beginning of the year for $1000. THey are 50/50 in the SB, and you are risking $20,000 win or lose....that risk may be too big for you to stomache.

2. the hedge is an even value bet that you would not have bet on if you didn't have your original bet. for example, if someone offered you Bal -2 vs PHI (or whatever the line is now) at even money, you should do it to hedge your teaser bet...but you wouldn't do it if you had no teaser on.
