I have no need nor desire nor ability to defend anyone's handicapping but I do want to comment on one part of your post.

I would guess that the smarts go where the dollars are and it is only those privileged few, who have an individual genius for this sort of intuitive/experiential, yet highly rational grasp of information, that end up taking the cream home to mama.

I have talked to people and mentioned card counting. They then ask me, "You just play single deck games then right?

I say, "No. I can count 6 deck games."

Their eyes get HUGE and they either think there is no possible way or that I must be an absolute "genius." "You can count 6 decks?!?!" they say incredulously as though I am the incarnation of Einstein.

Card counting doesn't require genius, just effort to learn. Poker is the same way. I think most people can study poker and become a winning player if they work hard at it, but some people will have an inherent ability to do better which can not be gained through practice.

I think sports betting could be the same way. People that work hard at looking at sports betting can probably get an edge whereas some very few people will have a "natural ability" for it. Hell, even someone that makes no effort at all other than go to every sports book in Vegas and only bet the best lines probably is giving up very little to the house. That could be the "basic strategy" for sports betting.

I liked the "horseshit" analogy by the way. :-)
