Maddux' Pitch Count

In Response To: Maddux 3 days vs Marquis on multiple days? (docriver)

I heard an interview last night on ESPN radio with Leo Mazzone. When questioned about taking out Maddux so early, he responded the decision was based on two things: Maddux told Mazzone he had one good inning left, so Mazzone and Cox decided not too push it; and Maddux had a high pitch count. The interviewer pointed out Maddux threw only 86 pitches. Mazzone responded that's like a complete game for Greg Maddux.
